Important: Change to the Cologne culture promotion tax statute from 01/12/2014

Dear Sir or Madam,

We would like to inform you that, as of 1 December 2014, a culture promotion tax (Kulturförderabgabe) will be imposed at a new rate and subject to new guidelines. The new statue was published in the Cologne official register on 19 November, and has therefore only been available to us for a short time.

According to the new statute, every hotel guest must pay the tax unless they submit the documentation required by the municipal authority of the city of Cologne for exemption. That applies to each guest and for each stay.

The necessary forms are available online from the website of the municipal authority of the city of Cologne. We are also happy to send you the form by email.

In order to qualify for exemption, employees require a signed statement from their employer that they are staying in Cologne for business reasons – again for each stay. The guest must fill out the correct form with their ID card or passport number. Self-employed and freelance guests must also provide their tax identification number.

The culture promotion tax is not subject to VAT. The forms are provided in the official language of the municipal authority of the city of Cologne, German, and may not be translated into other languages.

Please support us by informing those planning to stay at the hotel about this change, so that they will be able to meet the legal requirements imposed by the municipal authority of the city of Cologne.

We are very sorry about the unavoidable administrative work caused by this new statute, but would nonetheless ask that you follow the new rules. If we do not receive all the required documentation we will have no choice but to add the culture promotion tax to the guest’s bill.
